Google Wallet support

leonhma opened this issue · comments

Feature description

It'd be great to have a 'add to google wallet' button for your certificates. There's googles documentation here, although you have to provide 'eligibility documentation'.

Problem and motivation

This would be great for having all your passes in one spot, and also benefit from googles optimisation for (for example) smart watches. Kind of low priority I'll admit, but it'd be a cool feature to see.

Is this something you're interested in working on

I'd be interested in working on it.... , although I have not worked on an Android app before, and maybe even the bigger problem, I don't have access to the documentation.

https://support.google.com/wallet/answer/12059257 lists the countries where this is already supported.

Is it the countries where a provider has made these features available in the google wallet app, or where googles api is accessible? Because I don't see much reason for Google to restrict COVID passes to certain countries.

@leonhma

My understanding from corona-warn-app/cwa-app-android#3486 (comment) is that the feature was declined by the Open Source Team last year when Google Wallet was called Google Pay. I assume also that the Open Source Team was replying on behalf of the responsible health authority in Germany: the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), and that if support for COVID-19 certificates in Google Wallet were to be extended into Germany, then it would need to be applied for by RKI. There is however some room for interpretation when reading the Eligibility requirements.

There hasn't been any update from the authorities in the issues I linked to (see #840 (comment)) during the last 12 months, so again I would assume that there is no change in their position of declining to support it.

Okay so if they applied then they will hear back once COVID passes come to Germany? I guess this is going to have to be put on hold until then...
