Maintainers info: Branching of 2.0-dev

I just created a 1.x branch for long term maintenance of the 1.x versions (if needed..).
The main branch now targets 2.x-dev, so the 2.0 milestone issues can be addressed.
Bugfixes should be merged in 1.x branch and then 1.x merged into main. Please keep in mind when merging PRs.
