HowAreYou: texting to share social determinants of health

mollymcleod opened this issue · comments

BLUF: Patients share their mood every day via text message so providers can get a sense of what's going on in their life that might be affecting their health
Needs: Developer to build lightweight prototype? I can do design.
Status: Idea

Thought about this after reading CHCF's design challenge "Putting Care in Context: Empowering Patients to Share Their Barriers to Good Health".

The design brief from CHCF:
"Today, health care providers do not routinely seek information about a patient’s social, environmental, and behavioral hurdles to health. When it does happen, the care provider initiates the conversation by asking a uniform set of questions which are typically only focused on one facet of a patient’s life. The process is often rushed, not coordinated with screening for other barriers or risks, and the information may not make its way to other members of the patient’s primary care team or specialists. This design challenge aims to fix these problems by empowering patients to take an active role in recognizing, chronicling, and sharing information about hurdles in their life that impact their health."

Idea:
Patients are prompted everyday via text message to rate how their day is going or their mood (1-5 scale?), and optionally also text back a note or two about why ("Stressful day at work" "Feeling lonely" "Couldn't sleep, neighbors are loud" "Went for a nice walk" "Haven't been able to buy groceries this week"). Health providers could view patient's ratings and notes over time, maybe in a view like GitHub's contributions:

Hey @lippytak, didn't you build, like, exactly this already?

This was a personal project for 2014 that I opened up to a few friends, but feel free to hop in if you want to see how it feels to get a daily mood text. You can text a short username to (510) 213-6505 to start. Remember: EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS PUBLIC ON THE WEB! (feature request...)

I'll open source the code when I have time and link to it here. There's LOTS and LOTS to add/explore in this domain. Feel free to use anything here as inspiration or just hijack and build off it.

Hi guys,

I've been using the service since May and I quite enjoy it. I'd be happy to help out with the code. Just let me know!

Alex

@sr3d awesome! I've been meaning to open up the repo and add a few new features for a while but I think this was the nudge I need. I'll get to it next week and ping this thread. Apologizing in advance for code quality. @daguar you want to write a bunch of tests for this, right?

hey @sr3d - check out the repo: https://github.com/lippytak/mood-map

I opened a couple issues if you want to work on something but of course feel free to add anything else you'd like to see.
