Open Referral: a common format for health/human/social service directories

greggish opened this issue · comments

What is it: a data exchange format for transferring health/human/social service directory data between information systems.

@spara's FAQ: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/codeforamerica/OpenReferral/master/docs/Human%20Services%20Data%20Standard%20Frequently%20Answered%20Questions.txt

Project Needs (dev/design/resources): we're looking for institutions who want to experiment with publishing their directories in this format, and consuming directory data from this format. We're also looking for hackers who want to help build the conversion scripts and other tools to help them do that. As well as geeks to develop various alternative format specifications like XML etc.

Status: Entering alpha! We're planning a workshop in Oakland in mid-July (7/9-10) to gather various stakeholders together, review evaluate and reiterate.

Have you looked at schema.org as a possible starting point?

Hi @RobDolin yes, in fact this project was partially instigated by the 'civic services schema' put forth by schema.org. (I'd actually forgotten about this issue... please note that we've just posted version 1.0 of the Open Referral format.)

We mention schema.org in this section. It's one of two primary standards with which we're developing in alignment. One of our upcoming tasks is producing documentation that maps Open Referral fields to schema.org.
