simplify running gdb

at the moment, the best way i know to run a test under gdb involves some manual 
work and requires that the user knows --no-clean and --verbose, both of which i 
think are pretty obscure. (and although we've been coping with this, it's a 
non-obvious barrier for users not involved in the development of vogar itself.)
