Client refactoring

The client got crufty and hackish. We're taking it out of hackish and back into some semblance of order.
Currently going on in the client-refactor branch (see around commitish 15350a4).
Should be okay as of commitish 3104c44 (so merged into master). For further work, pull out into branch iss31.
