Store focused sample in history state (with replace)

Compromise solution... put it in the history state so we don't lose this information if we refresh or navigate to a different site, but also don't try storing URLs that might result in 404 later or always default to this sample - it's better to default to the recording view.
Session storage might be preferable to history state. Not sure if it makes a big difference but using session storage for this seems more natural.
