Outcome Visualisation 1 : FMCG major leverages disaster prediction data to provide flood-resilient farming advisory to vulnerable farmers in Sarpang (Bhutan)

  • FritterLays is a FMCG major that manufactures potato chips/wafers among other Food & Beverage products. It uses farm sensor & crop data, market data, weather data, and information on pests / diseases, etc. to deliver advisory to its potato farmers through SMS. With increasing floods over last 2-3 years, FarmSmart seeks to expand its portfolio to climate-shock resistant advisory in its portfolio.
  • In Thimpu, FritterLays uses its Climate Resilience Data Highways Platform to search for flood prediction data in Sarpang to identify the risk of submergence for farmlands in Sarpang.
  • FritterLays receives a list of flood prediction modelling services from disaster modelling startups present in the Climate Resilience Data Highways Network.
  • It views the datapoints in prediction data (e.g., confidence levels, risk levels, onset time, duration, flood depth, flood extent, flow velocity, runoff volumes, return periods, etc.) available from Sky Analytics - a disaster modelling startup in Bhutan
  • It then views 2 formats of prediction data available from Sky Analytics – WaterML, BUFR; it selects WaterML as the desired format
  • FritterLays views 3 modes of data fulfilment available from Sky Analytics – Rest API, Cloud, Email,
  • It selects Cloud storage as the preferred mode
  • FritterLays receives terms of the order and the payment information from Sky Analytics, and accepts the terms and conditions
  • Once payment is complete and the order is confirmed, FritterLays's farm advisory modelling software system imports flood prediction data from its server
  • FritterLays's proprietary advisory model layers this data on pre-existing agri-parametric data to indicate farmlands that need permanent soil mulching to protect paddy from floods
