Load average permanently above 1 when idle

Hi,

I'm using your work on my banana pi m64 (great work and documentation, by the way!). However, ever since I've installed it - and even after an update to kernel 3.10.105 - I have a load average constantly greater than 1 when my system is idle. Even after stopping all application, my load average is around 1.05, which is not normal considering that CPU is not stressed at all and I have no I/O.

I've done some googling, but found no reason why the load average could be that high with a minimum of process running. If CPU is not used it could be EMMC access, but I checked the I/O and there is nothing there. I though there could be a Kernel issue, but I'm not sure at all.

Despite this load average, my system is running normally, but I would prefer to see a load average close to 0 when the banana pi is doing nothing.

So, first question: do you also observe this?
And secondly: do you have an idea of the root cause and how to fix it?

Some more info:

  • I'm running the system on EMMC
  • I've uninstalled all the graphic part to use the banana pi as a server

Hi @couloum ,

I suspect the unattended upgrades is the culprit. I have removed it on firmware v2 and got smoother running. Please, if you haven't removed, remove it and check again from time to time. The drawback is you have to do apt-get update/dist-upgrade when you want to get newer versions.

Please, type:

sudo apt-get remove unattended-upgrades
sync
sudo apt-get autoremove
sync
sudo apt-get clean
sync
sudo reboot

If you can, please do a fresh install for this version:
https://github.com/avafinger/bpi-m64-firmware-v2

If you did all this already, run htop and check eMMC access process.

** Update:
I just checked my bpi-m2u uuning on eMMC: uptime and get: 2 days up and load average: 1.15 (idle), will check my H5 tomorrow to get an idea.

H5 running from eMMC, Desktop with unattended-upgrades removed:

So, if you have clipit, remove it also, it takes high-load of cpu.

Thanks for your answers, but I have neither unattended-upgrades nor clipit installed on my bpi-m64. I guess it is something else.
I can try using your firmware-v2 work, but do you really think there will be much difference compared to my current system updated to kernel 3.10.105?

I tried playing with mpstat to understand what my cores are doing, but it is unclear... Maybe something about number of interruptions for NET_RX which is a bit higher than other values? I find it hard to believe...

it's the cpufreq_interactive monitor the root of the problem, i changed the kernel to slowdown a bit, got better results, drop to 1.09. Please test with this new build and see what you get.

You can also set the CPU governor to "ondemand" but i got mixed results, some times get near to 1.0 but as soon as i monitor it, it increases a lot.
echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Attached is a script you may change/run from time to time and check some values.
run: sudo m64_health.sh just to print some info.

backup your Image and Kernel modules and extract this new one. Let me know if you get better results.

I'm sorry if I misplaced.

There was a similar case on the ARM board in the past.
It seems there was a problem with USB detect at this time. I do not think there is script.bin in m64, so I do not know how to fix it.

If nothing changes then @kometchtech may be right and someone need to investigate the usbc0 configuration.

There is no script.bin but you can decompile the DTB file like this:
dtc -I dtb -o m64.dts a64-2GB.dtb

Edit the m64.dts, make some changes and compile again.
dtc -I dts -O dtb -o a64-2GB.dtb m64.dts

Note that this USBC0 (OTG) and USBC1 configuration was taken from Android build and i have changed it on the latest firmware.

Yes, the OTG USB configuration was the issue. No need to update kernel, but i am testing cpufreq with smoother performance with the modified kernel, You don't need to update. I will just flood some test results here, so you can decide to try or not.

  • Forgot to comment, after you disable OTG in the DTB you will need a reboot.

I applied the new dtb and I confirm the load average is better!

I didn't applied the new kernel, but it seems that dtb change is enough.
