Fallback or fail gracefully without memcache process

I'm working in an environment where I don't have a lot of control over servers and would like a solution that fails gracefully if the server cannot connect to a memcached process. I have tried one or two things without success.
Do you have any suggestions or can this be a feature built-in?
Never mind. It's not exactly what I was meaning.
