I don't know anything about userscripts. Can someone summarize why they're more portable/beneficial?

There are ups and down.
Userscripts requires an extension to run in most browsers. (For instance greasemonkey).
When made "right" they'll for the most part work with all browsers that support userscripts (either natively or through the use of extensions)

The big benefit is that you'll have less to maintain. :)

However, native extensions are a much smoother experience for the end-user.
