Spurious unsaved buffer message

After long edit sessions (a day or so), occasionally exiting a buffer says "Buffer has unsaved content. Force close with :q!" when closing, even though there are no changes.
This also occurs when creating a new buffer, writing it to "foo", closing the buffer (no error), opening it again with new or via directory buffer and then trying to close it with Q.
