Adding Ropsten to MetaMask does not work

Trying to add the Ropsten network to MetaMask results in this error

Expected an array with at least one valid string HTTPS url 'rpcUrls', Received: https://ropsten.infura.io/v3/${INFURA_API_KEY},wss://ropsten.infura.io/ws/v3/${INFURA_API_KEY}

I can add other networks from the site to my MetaMask account.
