Topic such as

  1. Font families: \rmfamily = serif, \sffamily = sans-serif, and \ttfamily = fixed-width
  2. Font shape: \slshape = slanted, \scshape = small caps, \itshape = italics, and \upshape = roman.

Notice how \rmfamily represents serif typeface, whereas \upshape represents roman (as opposed to italics) typeface. These misnomers could be very confusing.
