invalid nginx configuration after upgrade from 3.14.2 to 3.16.3

I just upgraded all stacks from 3.14.2 to 3.16.3 and nginx -t would fail with
nginx: [emerg] could not build map_hash, you should increase map_hash_bucket_size: 32
I noticed that the previous version of /etc/nginx/nginx.conf on the server had at the beginning of the html
map_hash_bucket_size 64;
I added that line and with that I can now restart nginx
I compared with other servers I run Wordsops on v 3.16.3 and of course that directive is not present and it is not an issue...
Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot this issue other than hacking the nginx.conf with that directive?
