Show song variations as single entry

achimmihca opened this issue · comments

Actual behaviour

Some songs have dedicated duet and instrumental versions.
At the moment, each of these are shown in the song search.

When you need to provide two TXT files and Ultrastar also shows two different songs in the UI, it will be confusing for the user. "Which one should I use?"

It also bloats the search results.
Instead of skipping the song once, you have to skip every version of it.
With two TXT files you also double the possibilities where the user has to choose how many players to sing the song with.

Expected behaviour

You have the option in the interface and the second version of the song/TXT file. From my point of view it should be in one place.

Suggestion from #363 (comment)

Variations of a song may include

  • covers
  • instrumentals
  • duets
  • translations / different languages

Maybe, linking a song could be done when artist and title are the same.

But I found that UltraStar song variations typically have a "duet" or "instrumental" in their name.
The audio file will also not match in the case of instrumental vs. non-instrumental songs.

Plus, it is unclear how to present and switch variations of a song in the UI.

This needs more thought-out specification.

IMHO, showing such song variations as single entry may be more confusing than helpful.
