Call for editors

Rust Magazine is maintained by Rustaceans from all around the world, currently, we still need Rustaceans to join us as the editor team. If you have interested, don’t hesitate to let us know. Feel free to comment below.

We are supposed to deliver issue monthly, each issue should include at least 10 articles, what an editor's responsibility is:

  • Writing articles for the issue if you have an idea
  • Review PR from the community to ensure each article is acceptable before the PR gets merged
  • Call for articles from the community for each issue

Also, we can learn a lot from TWiR, they have a mature editor team.

Hi Folyd,

  1. Main thing I think (from looking at TWIR) is to establish what goes in Rust Magazine and what doesn't.
Part of that is - what is different between TWIR and Rust Magazine?
  2. And the other thing is - how official is Rust Magazine? - if its unofficial then magazine would need to state that somewhere.
  3. What is the situation with the software?
  4. I just read the first issue of TWIR from June 2013. I'm thinking that getting 10 articles to start with might be a bit ambitious - start smaller? Maybe first issue is a bit of writing about looking for editors and contributors and what you want in Magazine - is there overlap with TWIR and is it worth discussing with them before that?

Hi, @LCrossman. Thanks for your great questions.

Main thing I think (from looking at TWIR) is to establish what goes in Rust Magazine and what doesn't.
Part of that is - what is different between TWIR and Rust Magazine?

Yes, I think this is also the most important job of the editorial team. Personally, I think Rust Magazine has several differences from TWiR.

  • Rust Magazine was intended to be a publication for the Rust community, while TWiR is primarily a weekly newsletter to deliver a week-update on the Rust project and community.
  • Most of the content in TWiR is inappropriate for Rust Magazine, such as "Updates from the Rust Project", "Upcoming Events", "Quote of the Week", etc. "Project/Tooling Updates" such as rust-analyzer/IntelliJ-rust changelog should also be excluded. However, some great articles are acceptable for Rust Magazine. Instead of just showing it as a link in TWiR, we'll publish the entire article in an issue.

And the other thing is - how official is Rust Magazine? - if its unofficial then magazine would need to state that somewhere.

Currently Rust Magazine is an unofficial project. I will post a statement on README. However, I will be seeking email newsletter sponsorship from the Rust Foundation and hope to turn it into an official magazine if possible.

What is the situation with the software?

Rust Magazine was built by zine. Although zine is my personal project, I received Project Grants from the Rust Foundation. I'll keep maintaining it.

Yes, I totally agree that we should start smaller. My initial plan for the first issue is at most 10 articles. I will do my best to call for articles from the community. I'll also write one or more articles myself. I hope the first issue is a good starting point. Hoping we can get more than 5 articles. Sure, it's fine if we can't make it.
I think Rust Magazine is a good complement to TWiR, we don't have much overlap with each other.

Hi! I'm quite intereted in the editor thing. What is the qualification needed for being an editor? I do have some experience with Rust, but not much on writing and editing.

Hi George, I don't think there is anything specific, I am on the editorial board of scientific journal "Antibiotics", with a lot of other people. I used to organise a regular column in a scientific journal but that was a while ago. I know a bit of Rust and publish manuscripts where possible for open access.

It might be good to decide what we really wouldn't include - like gossip and anything that would break Rust code of conduct?

Hey guys, interested in joining as Editor. While still newbie in #rust I’ve got quite some years with other programming languages and other type of experience. What’s the process please, and thank you for consideration.

Hi, thanks @macko76. I'm just back from my holiday. We are just the beginning of running a Rust Magazine, we don't have any particular process yet. I'll send a PR (similar to #8) and am so honored to have you onboard. 👏

It's great that there are getting to be more editors - should we have a table/google form somewhere with a few things like level of Rust knowledge, other languages knowledge, human languages knowledge, other skills that editors can fill in themselves?

Good consideration, thanks @LCrossman. Maybe we can do it latter?

Hi @Folyd
I teach my students Rust at a university in China. I've also peer-reviewed a large number of articles.
I see a lot of potential in the RustMagazine project, so I'd be glad to assist you in the editorial team.
Let me know how I can help.

Great! Welcome to the editorial team. I'm looking forward to working with you.

Hi @Folyd I am interested in helping out for reviewing the writings and proof reading.
happy to help :)

Hi @Folyd , I founded two print magazines and was chief editor in the past.
In 1996 a german magazine called JavaSpektrum (all about Java).
In 2009 I created the magazine RailsWay (all about Ruby and Rails).

As a chief editor, I was responsible for coordinating the authors and planning the main focus of each issue.
I have a solid technical background in Java, Ruby, Go and NodeJS. Currently, I'm diving deep into Rust and examining the field of writing operators for Kubernetes.

I would be grateful to join the team and contribute as an author and editor.
What do you think?

Cheers
Michael
