Is it possible to add rich text like bold, italic and text direction?

At this moment, no. There is an implementation of rich-text-editing based on a fork of ot.js in the Firepad repo, though. I haven't looked at the implementation but you can try to use this in your. Maybe I'll merge this implementation or write an implementation for rich-text editing in the future, but I have no definite plans.

They've contacted me and I've said that I think that their current implementation duplicates too much code.

Did you consider adding rich-text editing?
Firepad looks nice but if I understand correctly, only exposes the client-side and force me to rely on their server or implement the server part myself.
