Project status?

I noticed that there haven't been any repo updates since end of 2017 and I've seen mentions from one of the (or the only?) maintainers (cf., "contributors") that they haven't had time due to day job.

What's the state of the project? How many of the contributors have write access? I'm quite interested in this so that we can move away from a windows VM solely for running vcenter.

Thank you!

vcenter, you mean XenCenter (or XCP-ng Center)?

I'm following the project since a while and sadly there's no activity "recently" (2017 as you said), plus XAPI changed a bit since last available version. It's time consuming to follow those changes. Have you tried Xen Orchestra? This is a way to solve the "I need a Windows VM" to administrate your XenServer/XCP-ng infrastructure 😉

Whoops, yes, xencenter. I have infrastructure on both so it's easy to slip.

I've come across Xen orchestra and I see that you're involved with that project. How is XO involved with Xen-ng? I see that XO moved their forums to xen-ng.

I'm both Xen Orchestra and XCP-ng project founder (well, "founder" can have different meaning: XO is more a real creation I did from scratch unlike XCP-ng, which is a fork of XenServer. But in short I decided to fork it and luckily people followed me). So yes, it's the same entity behind, the company I co-founded, Vates, back in 2012.

If you want a quick recap, you can find a video on the last FOSDEM where I did a talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpGC5zuLjSs

It really helps to synchronize both teams (XO team is now around 6 full time devs, XCP-ng will grow to that number in 2020) and be able to keep up the pace. Especially since with did XCP-ng, we are adding new API endpoints/features really fast and I don't think you can manage to "follow" without people dedicated full time.

Obviously, all of this is possible thanks to companies using the turnkey+support version of Xen Orchestra, and hopefully, doing the same for XCP-ng (right now, XOA is paying XCP-ng devs, but I hope this won't have to last long).

I think you know pretty much everything now 😄

edit: as you may have noticed, we are doing Open Source from the start. So anyone can contribute to both projects! Eg if you don't want to use XOA Free, you can have all Xen Orchestra features by cloning it on GitHub and following our doc here. But as a quick XenCenter replacement, XOA Free can do the job :)

Thank you very much! For both taking the time to explain, and the transparency.
