Cannot save text variables into spells

Issue description
When I was working on the xstate plugin, I was having trouble saving the spells for review with other developers since the variables of xstate are lost.
Steps to reproduce
- Make a spell
- Add text variables
- Save as a spell
- Load a spell and see that things are lost.
