default ftplugin/python.vim setting tabstop to 8

It seems the default python.vim ftplugin is overriding the indentation settings from my vimrc. This is quite odd, and surprising that it's just now happening. I wonder if it's caused by the recent manpager changes?
I've noticed the same in gitcommit filetypes, where I try to indent a block, and it inserts tabs.
