vim - after switching buffers, the entire file is often highlighted

The highlight persists until ALE is toggled off/on, or the file is written.
It might not be the entire file. I've noticed in Rust projects that it's after from the start of the file until the first warning/error.
I haven't experienced this in a while. Perhaps it was fixed by updating to Ubuntu 22.04?
