What will happen in your session?

Participants will start exploring how technology is used to monitor, track and understand wildlife movements by professional conservationists, with a hands-on look at actual sensors and cameras currently used to monitor arboreal species in the Amazon rainforest, watch penguins live in Antarctica, and track sea turtles off the coast of Africa. After the introduction, we'll introduce British wildlife to the audience and highlight how they can personally use technology too to monitor and assess wildlife in their own back gardens. We'll then explore how to build a DIY Naturebytes Wildlife Cam Kit (Pi-powered) and invite participants to build and deploy their own camera the same evening (that we will provide) to try and discover if there are urban foxes nearby.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Inspire the MozFest audience to use their digital making skills, often as a family, to aid the conservation of native wildlife here in the UK by using accessible technologies such as the Raspberry Pi and camera module to help assess wildlife populations. The evening event will also be family friendly, with a flask of tea and a chat outdoors whilst we deploy the cameras to highlight what else they may spot.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We will bring example sensors for participants to explore and will provide a limited number of Naturebytes Wildlife Cam Kits for the evening event workshop building them.

@al2ka how many kits are you bringing along for you workshop? Also, are you planning to bring along your own SD cards, or is there anything you need us to make sure is installed?
