What will happen in your session?

Introduce students to elements of computational thinking and programming principles through dance and physical computing.

This 60 minute session will be movement based and is for any level of dance and or computing skills. We will introduce and begin to understand instruction, looping and selection through creating a dance sequence in groups. We then introduce lights already coded in Crumble that change according to audience interactions that change the colour of the light. Each group of students will then take their movement sequence created and make it reactive to the different colour outcomes of the light that the audience is controlling.

Example: Jump when the light is green, stop when the light is red, continue
movement sequence when the light is off.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal is to make coding accessible by introducing it through movement. We approach it in two different ways, one through creating a group movement sequence and the other by becoming performers that are controlled by an audience through technology. In both cases the participants begin to understand:
-the need to be specific with instruction (by writing or 'coding' a dance movement and testing this on another group)
-rule vs sequence based instructions by choreographing or 'coding' their movements
-different looping possibilities by choreographing or 'coding' movement
-selection and looping by reacting to changing lights that the audience controls.
-testing, discussing and making improvements

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Our requirements will be to have a large clear space where up to 35 people can move freely (10m x 10m) ideal. We will bring all other equipment and will only require a couple plug points.

60 mins

@flukeout just noting this late submission, I've been in conversation with Rebecca at Pell Ensemble about this session, needs to be added to our working sheet

@ArtsAward thank you, I've added it.

Very keen to support this @flukeout and if you need anything from me just let me know. It can be labelled as Youth Led too :)

Hello Rebecca - We are very happy to announce you that we have decided to accept your session at the festival this year! Congratulations! 🎉

Hello @edovio thats great news, myself and Lubomila are excited to deliver the session. When does the schedule get solidified?

Hello @RebeccaEvans22!
As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

Hi there! Below is a rough description with some bullet points of what will be covered. Ideal would be a 90 minute session but we can do it in 60.
Title of session: Dance and Coding

Main aims of session: The overall aims of the session, usually a full day workshop, are to introduce students to computational thinking principles and programming principles through dance and physical computing using Crumbles.

Short description of session (up to 150 words):
This short session is for students with any level of dance and or computing skills. We will introduce and begin to understand programming or coding principles through creating a dance sequence in groups. Then using Crumbles we will code lights to change according to audience interactions, such as movement or pressing buttons that change the colour of the light. Each group will then take their movement sequence created and make it reactive to the different colour outcomes of the light that the audience is controlling.

Example: Jump when the light is green, stop when the light is red, continue looping through the movement sequence when the light is off.

Concepts covered:
-programmes
-instruction/algorhythm
-looping
-selection
-testing a programme and making improvements

This workshops helps to draw girls into coding and starts to place computing in a new and different environment for everyone. By taking code out of the computer lab it allows us to use different styles of learning to introduce computation and get students thinking creatively about its application.

Dear Facilitators,
we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit
It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)

Thank you very much for the detailed session outline @RebeccaEvans22 - that sounds great. Have you done this session with an older audience? Does it work well with a mixed-age audience? Mozfest can have a wide range of participants so there may be some educators coming along looking for activity ideas as well. What do you think?

Hello @RebeccaEvans22 - - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

  • Web Literacy Space Schedule
    • It's a public Trello board, so please don't make any changes!
    • We are still finalizing the longer Gallery Space session drop-in times.

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

Hello @RebeccaEvans22 I need to ask you to give me the Email contact of all the additional Facilitators in your Session. You can send me by Email at the address: edovio@mozillaitalia.org. Thanks you & see you at the MozFest!!!
