Tap into 5V Rail

Phrogz opened this issue · comments

Connect 24 DC connectors to the 5V rail, possibly via tap screws. Solution needs to seal the rail against air intrusion.

Bought #8 1/2 steel metal screws. Too long, probably too fat. Going to look for aluminum screws (better conductivity); failing that, brass; failing that steel, but the right size.

Bought some #3 3/8" brass screws. These seem perfect.

Tapping a thin nail into the insulation first makes it easy to get the screw started.

Once screwed in, I tried pulling the screw out ~as hard as I could, using pliers, and the screw remained firmly lodged.

After our quick-n-dirty solder test, Mattias pulled really hard on the soldered wire and was unable to pull it off the post.

Power rail mounted on hoop, 48 posts tapped into rail, 24 power nipples installed and soldered onto posts.
