`path` as a positional argument?

It’s pretty subjective but I think it would be slightly nicer as a positional argument, especially as there aren’t any currently and it seems like an obvious thing to pass.
This looks like a good idea, given that all four exported functions have this parameter. It would also play nicely with #3.
