Affected app version

1.1.1

Affected Android/Custom ROM version

Android 14 / HyperOS

Affected device model

Redmi Note 12 (4g)

How did you install the app?

F-Droid / IzzyOnDroid

Steps to reproduce the bug

Receive voicemail, then check said voicemail, delete voice messages so voicemail is completely empty again. Finally wait and it'll followed by constant harassing notifications telling you, that you have a voicemail when you haven't.

If you swipe away the notification, it'll do the same thing. Rinse and repeat.

Expected behavior

Once voicemail is empty and checked, it should not be doing as explained above until you receive another voice message.

Actual behavior

Please read the first paragraph.

Those actions are not supported in Fossify Phone. Are you sure you are using Fossify Phone?

I'm definitely using Fossify phone, here's the screenshot to prove it

@TheR0cketMan please share a screen recording for this.

You can also find the actual app that is sending this notification by long pressing on the notification. I highly doubt it's Fossify Phone.

I just sent you a screenshot & I know for a fact it's Fossify Phone.

I don't appreciate you calling me a liar and deliberately coming at me like that and causing trouble.

I filed a bug report for the developers to look in to. I can clearly see you aren't one so I suggest staying out of it, mind your own business and let the devs take a look themselves.

That doesn't imply that Fossify Phone is the app sending continuous notifications.

I don't appreciate you calling me a liar and deliberately coming at me like that and causing trouble.

That wasn't my intent, really. Screen recordings are often helpful in cases like this, we might spot something you did not.

Anyway, I'm closing this because Fossify Phone does not support or handle voicemails. The notification is most likely coming from another app or service or an app disguised as Fossify Phone.

I know it's from Fossify Phone for a fact. I don't have any other phone app installed and when I tap on the notification to check the voicemail(s) I've received, it takes me directly to Fossify. Voicemails can only be received and checked via Phone apps.

So saying it's invalid and making out it doesn't support voicemail is a load of rubbish.

I opened the issue to try and help as it's clearly a bug which needs looking in to. But sure, if you don't care about your users or your software enough to fix bugs, go ahead and close it.

Looks like I'll have to look for an alternative app. Shame really because Fossify showed promise and I really liked it.

@TheR0cketMan Can you try to go to settings -> apps and notifications-> notifications -> notification history , and check whether those notifications actually arrive from Fossify Phone?

These notifications are not managed by the Phone app (whether stock Phone app or Fossify Phone) but by the "Phone Services" system app, you can go to you installed Apps>Show System Apps>Phone Services, force to stop the process and the notification should disappear. Additionally, if you look at the Phone Services app notifications categories, you will see voicemail as one of them, but it cannot be silenced on most manufacturers. Therefore, as it is a system app, the only way to get rid of these notifications is to contact your carrier and ask to them. They are the ones sending to you these notifications after all.

But for some reason, when tapping on the notification details in the Android status bar it's the default Phone app that will open, hence the confusion here.

@naveensingh I suggest putting a note in the FAQ about this, as well as a note in the Fossify SMS Messenger FAQ about Class 0 SMS/Flash SMS messages. In both cases, these are two ways that many carriers use to send SPAM/unsolicited advertising to the user, and because of the way they are shown on Android they seem to come from the apps used to manage calls and SMS. I know they're not the same thing, but in the past they both really irritated me.

I myself started using these alternative open source apps years ago trying to get rid of it until I discovered that they were managed by system apps and my carrier refused to deactivate it, so to deactivate the only way I found was to uninstall these apps from the system using ADB (I uninstalled SIM Toolkit app to get rid of Class 0 SMS/Flash SMS messages, Phone Services app I didn't need to because they disabled the voicemail SPAM when I asked).

Example of SPAM with Class 0 SMS/Flash SMS (with screen recording): https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/pcvmq0/if_i_click_ok_i_lose_my_mobile_network_operator/

Example of SPAM with the voicemail: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS20/comments/iqs2z2/voicemail_notification_wont_go_away/

Edit: correction and just to add:

Can you try to go to settings -> apps and notifications-> notifications -> notification history , and check whether those notifications actually arrive from Fossify Phone?

Notifications from these system apps Phone Services and SIM Toolkit do not appear there. I'm not sure about Phone Services since I managed to disable the voicemail years ago, but I'm sure Class 0 SMS/Flash SMS sent by the SIM Toolkit app don't appear there.

But for some reason, when tapping on the notification details in the Android status bar it's the default Phone app that will open, hence the confusion here.

Thanks for confirming! I suspected this was the case as the "X missed calls" notification is also created by a system app named 'Phone Calls'.

I suggest putting a note in the FAQ about this, as well as a note in the Fossify SMS Messenger FAQ about Class 0 SMS/Flash SMS messages.

Good idea, adding this to my TODO list.

Yeah I think FAQ entries really are the best way to help avoid issues like this one in the future. The Android really leads us to think that it is the Phone and SMS apps that do this and it is often really difficult stop this SPAM that carriers send, so at least this way the user who decides to use Fossify Phone/SMS and end facing this will be able to know what is happening.

Anyway, thanks for the effort to maintain these Apps. I can't donate to the project right now (I'm from a third world country so it's often not possible to donate even in a small amount), but I really appreciate the effort and dedication to building something that is free and that can be used by everyone, so thank you very much!
