support other operating systems

Might try to get it working on Windows 8 since I also have that.
No idea if this works on Linux or older OS X.

I need SET to be prepended for windows then it will work
@gdi2290 considering this doesn't even work on OS X anymore (it basically can't..), I'll give you write access if you want it.
