A1 Garage Door Service [★☆☆☆☆]

This review isn't even banned (yet, at least), but I feel so passionately about ensuring the 1-star review is seen that I'm just going to post this now, just in case.

Overall complaint, summary, or recommendation...

  1. They engage in questionable pricing practices where you cannot get a price without bending over backwards to their will.
  2. They are incompetent and don't know their own products they sell.

I'm trying to buy a brand new highly-insulated garage door (high R-value) to replace a brand new non-insulated garage door installed by the builder on a brand new house.

I wanted some information & an over-the-phone quote. They wouldn't give it to me. So, I spent 2 hours with an A1 tech rep on-site at my house. He took detailed photos & measurements of the whole garage & wrote down exactly what garage door & equipment I wanted ordered.

The A1 on site tech rep was great! A1 is not. They require the tech rep to be next to me for me to get a quote with real numbers. So, not only do I have to schedule an appointment to get a quote, but if the quote goes after-hours & the sales team goes home, you have to physically meet back up with the tech rep again to try to get a quote. Pretty asinine. I don't have time to let a company like this waste it all. Stay away. Find a company that can give ballpark quotes over the phone, via email, or via their website. A1 is a waste of everyone's time.

Update 20 Sept. 2022 9:00am: this company is an absolute joke.
I can confirm the incompetence goes all the way to the top.
I've now spent an additional 1 hr. on the phone with an A1 top-level person who works directly for the C-level executives of the company (ex: CEO), & they still can't give me an exact price (they gave me a range of $10,000 ~ $13,000, stating they don't have enough information...after 2 hrs at my house too). Not only that, they don't even know their own doors they sell. They have detailed measurements & photos of the garage & existing door, & exact specs of what I want: Clopay 9203 (2", long panel, polyurethane insulation, R-18.4), custom Color Blast paint to match Dunn-Edwards DEC765 Bone color, & a top row of Plain Long double-paned insulated windows, frosted. And the latest info. I got on the phone just now is "we can only give an estimate range of $10k~$13k because we still don't know all the specs of the door, such as the thickness." This is the most gimmicky load of BS I have ever heard! The 9203 alone specifies the thickness, and they have already had a tech on-site to do detailed photos and measurements!

Please, don't be a sucker. Do NOT use A1. It is very rare I feel so strongly against one particular company. And, this feeling is prices aside.

Their price range they gave me, now after 3+ flippin hours with them, is $10k~$13k. I am not giving them a low star rating because their prices are high, I am giving them low stars because they are incompetent, don't even know their own doors (the C-level aid I spoke to said I didn't give them a door thickness when pg. 3 of their Clopay manual states that the 9203 is a 2 inch door), and they are possibly manipulative. Why would they have you jump through all these hoops except to try to up-sell you because the average customer doesn't research like I do?

Anyway, here are some price comparisons as well.

Let's compare 4 companies in Sierra Vista:

16'x7' 2-car garage Clopay 9203 long panel 2" R-18.4 any standard color, plain long double-paned insulated windows with frosted glass:

  • A1: ~$10k (they don't even know; see above)
  • Godstone: $6230.40 - if you're in a hurry, just use Godstone and be done! He is competent and knows his stuff and is reachable! Great company.
  • Westover: $5130, but is a bit harder to reach. Still very competent though. Great company.
  • Stan Greer: they don't sell the Clopay, but they do sell a very comparable Amarr Olympus OL3200 white short panel insulated door, with insulated double-pane frosted windows, for $4837.00 with installation. But, the downside? Stan Greer doesn't know their garage doors either. I had to hand-hold them through the process to choose my door.

So, we have:

  • 0 stars: A1: ~$10k; INSANELY INCOMPETENT, possibly manipulative
  • 5 stars: Godstone: $6230.40; very competent and easy to reach
  • 5 stars: Westover: $5130; very competent
  • 2.5 stars: Stan Greer: $4837.00; partially competent, but also very frustrating to work with; they cater to builders, not homeowners

Update. This review is now banned. Here's the latest version:

I'm going to delete it and repost a really short version of it. Pisses me off they are banning legitimate reviews.

My new review: https://goo.gl/maps/NSNhTGnRMdpCAfCh8:

★☆☆☆☆

One of the worst companies I've ever worked with, period. Good luck trying to get a quote from them. Good luck trying to get them to be honest and straightforward with you. And, good luck trying to get them to give you a reasonable price comparable to the going rates in the market.

Check out Westover Garage, Godstone, or Stan Greer, instead, in that order. I used Westover. Great price; great service; honest.

Related: my 5-star review of Westover Garage: https://goo.gl/maps/mUZ2Np9LHpxRLfD56

★★★★★

Great price; great service; honest.

Be patient, getting a new garage door takes about 4 to 5 months right now.

Get competing quotes from Godstone and Stan Greer.

Whatever you do, stay away from A1 Garage. They are manipulating their reviews and banning/deleting 1-star reviews, in addition to manipulating customers when you try to get a quote.

They banned my review again! :( (just 2 posts up).

Here's what I see though:

I'm deleting it and writing another one. Man this is irritating! No wonder they have almost all 5-star reviews! They are super actively-engaged in deleting every possible negative review.

Update: it looks like they've banned me, not my individual reviews. Even deleting and rewriting the review doesn't make it show up just now when I look at it in an incognito window!

That sucks. Here's what you'll see when you go here: https://goo.gl/maps/jFG86WAdPTrunpeT9:

I can't believe they can do that. I wonder how they do it...
