Migrate to ESM

We eventually need to migrate the project to ESM as modules start upgrading one by one. Part of a long-term roadmap, probably late 2021 or early 2022.
On hold indefinitely. Transitioning to ESM requires a tremendous amount of effort. Probably late 2022, if ever.
