Temporary stop of Boostnote-mobile

We're going to close this project for a while because the code quality is too bad and the original maintainer left this project quite ago.

But, it doesn't mean that we give up this project. We'll be back after we finish renewing of Boostnote. The renewed app will use CouchDB(or other comptible db to it). So, lots of changes should be required. And, we write whole stuff in native languages, Swift and Kotlin.

Anyway, if you're interested in the renewing, please join our slack and ping me. 😄 😄

Thanks.
Junyoung Choi, @Rokt33r of BoostIO.

Hi @Rokt33r , I fully understand your decision. Better to start from scratch with the mobile app once you have the time to fully commit to it. I do have a question though:

I saw that you're planning on moving to CouchDB. I'm interested to know: how would that work with the regular sync options, like Dropbox?

Do you want to run a CouchDB server as well? Or is CouchDB only going to be used locally, on the device?

how would that work with the regular sync options, like Dropbox?

It won't support any other sync options. We'll figure out later.

Do you want to run a CouchDB server as well? Or is CouchDB only going to be used locally, on the device?

The app will have its own db(PouchDB). And we'll host couchdb so users can sync between their devices.

Can we have an update on this? I switched to Boostnote a while ago, just to find I can't even view (let alone manage) my notes on the go. This android app is an essential feature to Boostnote.

I mainly switched because my notes would be stored as unbreakable text files which are easy to sync and not dependent on the software in case development stops. So does the move towards CouchDB mean my notes will get locked up eventually?

As us non-boostnote-devs are not in the slack group, @Rokt33r, please just give us a simple: "Yes, we're working on it" or "No, don't expect anything soon". This way people can decide if its worth the wait for them or look for alternatives.

@Rokt33r Hi, i use boostnote on mac very well. I see you will develop Android app by kotlin, so I want to participate in the development. When does it start?

Any news on development of the android app yet?

Well, this is disappointing. I even went into the Slack group and asked devs there to give us an update here. Looks like even thats to much to ask. As it's been a whole month of silent treatment now, thumbs down, big time.

@Memphizzz I'm sorry. I cannot afford to develop mobile version now. We desperately need someone who can take over this project... 😢

I see, well thats some information at least. Thank you. I just checked IssueHunt.io as I think this could be the way to bring this app to life. There is a boostnote-mobile repo in there with already 120$ collected, but it results in a 404 when you click on it. My guess would be that bringing that IssueHunt.io repo back to life would encourage some Dev to develop the Android App, especially if some people from this thread throw in a couple of bucks.
@Rokt33r can you reactivate that repo?

@Memphizzz $120 is a bug. We've retrieved all deposits since we notice we couldn't afford to maintain this project! Btw, let's talk in slack! It is not possible for me to check every notifications in github now. So, I might response late if we keep talking here... 😢

Why not use react-native?

Hi! How about boostnote-mobile "view only mode" for iOS?
I often want to check my notes on my iPhone.
Please think on it!

Hi is there any update? how is the project going?

its an awesome app, please renew mobile version

@Rokt33r I've noticed there's an Issuehunt page for Boostnote but wasn't sure if work on the mobile app was on there.

I'm sure if some Flutter devs know they'll get paid for remaking this app in Flutter they would be keen to do it, I'm personally a part of a couple different online communities so I could post about it and spread the word.

I have good news. After we release renewed app, we will start working on new mobile app. I guess MVP app should be released the end of this year. It will use react-native as same as this repository.

Hearing this news made my month! I am of course wondering - now that it's 2020 - what's the latest projected release timeline?

As someone who has tried every other markdown editor that has an IOS app as well, I am so disappointed in all of the alternatives that all of my "markdown hopes and dreams" are actually riding on getting a mobile Boostnote, even if the feature set is limited. This actually is the closest I have felt to dumping Evernote once and for all!

Also, I hope you're not afraid to charge for this. I know I would gladly pay!

The Boostnote Slack channel #dev-next has all the news but you may also want to follow https://github.com/BoostIO/BoostNote.next/
