If it's not doable, then I'm blaming Cinnamon and Metacity for it.

@feren Describe the hack in words and illustrate it with a screenie or two. Oh, I'm also having trouble with Smaragd but I'm confident.

Edit ~/.profile and add a line:
export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME

I think Elbullazul is on Vacation. Which is cool.
