Maybe a stupid question, but if gearman is running on a separate server, supervisord should run on the same server as WordPress (i.e. it's used to control wp-gears-runner.php) ?
Yep, supervisor is there so you can make sure you always have a specified number of gearman workers running. You'll need that plus the php gearman extension on whatever server(s) you run workers with.
